Alienware if you want performance, pricey though.
I recommend Dell for cheap laptops.

Have you considered the Asus EEE PC - If I was going to college I'd personally use one as there not too costly if it gets broken or stolen and they're pretty quick on Linux for just loading simple word processed documents or notes and the odd web page or email.

Very small and light weight too but I guess you might want XP which costs a little bit more and probably won't be at it's absolute best on it, the Linux should be easy though but for what your doing I don't see a problem.

It's useless beyond college use though, however it does have Open Office, Firefox, MSN, Skype and a few other essentials.

Wow Moss! Look at your spelling mistakes! I don't recommend a laptop for you, your fat fingers will break any laptop you buy! I mean you type so bad because your fat fingers touch 2 keys at a time! Last time i checked, Gary Welch didn't get into college so what makes you think your going to get in!
But ye Alienwares are good but pricey, maybe you could buy one with your stolen credit card
