I am in the middle of my work experience, and I have been placed in a primary school. I have the afternoon off for personal reasons.
It is really strange - first of all, the children love getting the attention of a 'grown-up' so much. Half the time you don't really know what they are on about but you say cool, oo, and yeah! They call me Miss ______ *not posting my second name on here* which is REALLY weird for me. Also since it is a Primary One class, they all chorused Good Morning Miss ______. I was kinda trying not to giggle at that point.
Well so what do I do all day? Erm sharpen pencils, play with kids, listen to stories, draw *honestly I was teaching them ;p*, teach them how to make daisy chains, sing lots of songs, sit in assembly *nearly sleeping* check if they need help, answer whenever they called out Miss ______?, count up house points and do things for the teacher.
A lot of the time I have noticed flaws in the way that the teacher treats the children, like they have an idea or a comment to make and they are told to be quiet, or asked if they would like to be the teacher instead. If I was one of those pupils I would be feeling pretty patronised and wound up. I'm the kind of person that listens to what they have to say, and if I have to be negative I also add a positive point. Like 'You need to get on with your work but afterwards you can play' or 'Thats a very good idea but maybe we should talk about it later'. Anyway the trained teacher is supposed to be the expert not me *shrugs*. If I had to choose between being Miss Honey or The Trunchbull, I think I'd choose the Miss Honey option. I wouldnt want pupils to be afraid of me, I would want them to see me as a friend who was there to teach them as well.
Working in a primary school is very different from being a pupil. The highlight of today was seeing my primary school idol - My music teacher. But this time I was not her pupil, I was her colleague. I really enjoy being equal to the teachers - not being looked down on as you are when you are a pupil. Hehe they have fun in the staff room - teachers arent SO bad.
