he's all happy and smiling the day after killing someone and seeing like a million dead bodies in his next door neighbour's house in a truely terrifying experience.

Yes, the ending could have been a lot better. The film was alright, but it's basically a remake of Hitchcock's Rear Window, which I would recommend to anyone.
