Service Pack 2 or later?

Hi all, just started using a new computer (well I say new, it's actually quite old), and I can't install Windows Live Messenger or IE7. They're both saying I have to get Service Pack 2 or later to install them.
So, I try to install updates, have the little icon in the bottom-right corner of my screen and wait. And wait. It got to 16% then went back down to 0%, and won't go back up again.
Anyone got any ideas of how I can get out of this kerfuffle? Bear with me 'cause I'm not much of a tecchie either!
