Can someone explain to me how the internet on the iPod Touch works?

Does it have to be connected to a wireless network?
If so,
Do I need a WPA/WEP key to connect?

It has to be on a wireless network to access the internet, yes. WPA, WEP? It depends if the access point asks for it, and which one it asks for.
