I was given 14 respect and it came up on the infofeed but when I hover over my badge I have six still?

The badge displays which bracket of respects you have been given, not the actual amount itself.

The first badge you receive is with 1 respect
The second one you receive is with 6 respects
The third one you receive is with 16 respects

If you have 14 respects it will still display the badge with 6 respects as you have not gone up to the next level yet.

That is indeed correct.
The most accurate way of finding out how many respect points you have is opening up the infofeed and clicking through. Not sure why they just didn't make it automatically change on the badge name.

Well check, click on the infofeed and then click yourself, then click badges and goto achievents and make sure you read the title of it. Example in the description of the badge it says you've been respected a further of 100, that means you need 166 respect points if you get what I mean. It should change.
