Ok, I am new to this whole website thing. I would like to buy a domain, Shawnstra.com. How would I go and do this? I don't really get it, when I visit shawnstra.com, it does not exist yet, does it mean say if I use godaddy to buy the domain, godaddy would buy the domain and give it to me? I see lots of sites offering to sell this domain name, but which one should I go to? Thanks. I'll give rep for help Also should I use a private registration?

Registering a domain is pretty quick and simple. First things first, you need to find a domain registrar. There are literally thousands out there, so it is a matter of finding the one you like best, or the cheapest or the one with the best logo - it doesn't matter.

You can then purchase the domain via PayPal or any other payment methods. You are now the proud owner of which ever domain name you want.

    A few domain registrar's I recommend:

I am looking towards godaddy. Can I use the domain with a site not hosted on GoDaddy?

    This is really easy.
Here are a few domain sites:

Then we come to the hosting bit,
You could get quite good hosting from someone on the forum. You simply request it in the "Free Requests" forum.

    Good luck!

I already have a host. Regardless of wherever you register your domain, you can use it on any host? Is that correct.

Yeah, you can change the domain to any host by changing the nameservers.
