Default Getting photos off camera... [+rep]

I put the memory card in to the card reader, plugged it in, and it hasn't come up on the desktop (I'm on a mac), do I have to do something special? I thought maybe it was Image Capture I had to use, but that said nothing is plugged in.

Why not just plug the camera in via USB and use iPhoto or whatever?
