Awesome there's quite a few options for you but it should be easy enough. You might have to use Linux if you want the absolute cheapest option but that can do everything Windows can do, it just takes a bit of getting used to. However you can still use Windows XP on some cheap laptops.

Try searching for 'Netbooks' if you want a small, cheap and light laptop. These cost from around £160-£300.

Some of the better one's are the Asus EEE PC (There's lots of versions), Acer Aspire One or Samsung NC10

I'm sure he is capable of browsing a website .

The Aspire One or ASUS EEE 701 are cheap netbooks, and are fine for what you'd do thread starter.

The Acer Aspire One, with 1 GB RAM and 120 GB HDD and Linux is available for £199.99 from Amazon UK.
I've ordered one for Christmas, if you want I'll let you know how I get on with it?

Oh and a tip for netbooks: Get Linux versions, you have to pay £50-70 more to get Windoze versions when you can just torrent XP Home/Pro for free and install that after purchasing the device.

The HP mini 1000 and Dell Inspiron 10 (i think thats the name of the dell) have pretty good reviews from cnet, I'd recommend those. The smaller ones (especially the 7 and 8 inch ones) will cripple your hands because they keyboard is just too small to use properly, their only use really is to take places because they're so portable.

Oh btw, you might want to tell us the screen size you're after, the smaller screens of the netbooks aren't for everyone
