Reducing size of file? REP+

I was wondering, how do I reduce a file size?
For example I wanted to put a few episodes of a program on a cd/dvd but its too big for it.

Could somone give me what programs to use and perhaps a tutorial?

Just remeber, compressing can somtimes distort the quality

Right click the file -> Properties -> Advanced -?> Compress contents

Whenever I do that, it only makes the file about 1.5mb smaller.
