Nah you'll be fine, your laptop can handle 4GB of RAM, however it will only make use of 3GB cause your Vista is 32 bit and you would need to reinstall Windows and pay for a new copy if you wanted 64 bit (Out the question probably).

You could get 2X 2GB but it would only make use of 2GB of it, or you could do 2X 1GB for 2GB, or simple 1X 2GB for 2GB, the best option though would be 1X 2GB & 1X 1GB for 3GB of RAM

Chipset is your graphics. If you get 2x 2GB RAM it will only use 2GB RAM. Because Vista 32-bit cannot handle 4GB of RAM it will cancel out one of them so there really is no point get 2X 2GB RAM.

Well it can use 3.3GB, but that's getting technical, you can get 1 x 2GB and 1 x 1GB, it's up to you, you could get 4GB if it's cheap and you can get an extra 300MB of RAM.

The intel is your built in chipset.

Yeah if your using an 32 bit operating system your computer will only recognise about 3gb of it, anyway It's not about quantity of RAM, it's also about the quality.

If you want max performance get some fast reliable RAM, regardless of the price.

If you legally own a license to 32bit, then you own a license to 64bit, the license key works for both versions and will activate. Infact, MS will sell you a 64-bit disk for like £5.
