I've never actually used it or looked at what it does; so basically what does it do?

When you request a website such as www.google.com you ask the DNS servers to resolve the domain name into an IP address so that you can access it. A faster/better DNS service means domains will be resolved quicker and/or more accurately, speeding up web browsing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

From what i understand by reading that page, it's using your own DNS instead of the one provided by your ISP.

OpenDNS is a DNS. It requires you to change 2 IPs. I most cases the DNS your ISP gives you doesn't work on some sites; so OpenDNS is an alternative. It's the best (imo) to be honest and a lot more securer. Phising sites are automatically blocked.
