He has to go into his routers settings if he didn't get a disc that does this for him. Tell him to try typing 192.168.1.1 into his internet browser and he should be asked to enter login details if he dont know them they will probably be 'admin' for user name and 'admin' for password or 'admin' for user name and 'password' for password if this isn't the case tell him to look in the routers manual and on the box or bottom of router and it will be on their somewhere.

Than has to go the WLAN/Wireless settings and it will come up with a page of the name of the network and encryption which he needs to setup I would advise WPA2 as WEP is not to good than just enter the password he wishes and click 'Appy', 'Save'.

He'd need to get on the control panel of it.
Typically by going to http://192.168.1.1/ from a connected device.

There will more than likely be a password to access the panel. The default values are username: 'admin' pass: 'admin' but it can depend on the make/model of router. Check documentation. Once logged in you should be able to set up WEP/WPA encryption fairly simply. Again, these things come with a user guide although it should be pretty obvious what to do anyway.

    Have fun.

//edit - lol at above, great minds and all that...
