Default Labour loses fight against Gurkhas

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8023882.stm
Gordon Brown's government has suffered a surprise defeat in the Commons on its policy of restricting the right of former Gurkhas to settle in the UK. MPs voted by 267 to 246 in favour of a Lib Dem motion that all Gurkhas be offered an equal right of residence.
Tory leader David Cameron backed the Lib Dem motion to scrap rules which leader Nick Clegg called "shameful".
Mr Brown's first significant defeat as PM came despite last minute concessions being offered to rebel Labour MPs.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith had promised to start a review of the new criteria - which was only announced last week - by the summer and gave an assurance veterans would not be deported.
This is excellent news, yet again Labour have gone against those who do good and fight for our country when they fully support the European Union allowing every tom, rick and harry from eastern europe in to this country, not to mention the immigration policy we have, if you can call it that.

A victory for fairness and common sense, and well done to Joanna Lumley who has fought the Gurkhas case.

Ridiculous policy to try implementing frankly. At a time where many UK citizens are at unrest about immigration, the group to target (if one has to be chosen) should not be those who've been at our side militarily for so long

As usual with this government its another case of 'target the easy/people who abide by the law'.

Thank God, they have more right than most people to stay in this country.

Also, well done on avoiding the filter on "Richard"
