Locking Threads

Far too often these days threads are being locked because they're 'arguments' or there's trolling. They're often being locked for no good reason or just the one rule breaker, I'm pretty sure to lock threads it used to required a lot of rule breakers but as of recent there's been next to nothing.

I'm not going to comment on the people trolling in this thread, but it's clear that they're the reason the thread has been locked, why haven't people been punished? There's not a single warning throughout the thread, I don't mean to pick on this moderator in particular as I'm just using it as an example but I think it's time people were actually punished for trolling rather than just locking threads.

Ok, I see your point and I do agree somewhat, However, that example is useful because I know what my call was. I decided to just close the thread and move on. This was because it was just general arguing, no rule breaking such as name calling or being rude was commited. Therefore I couldn't take any further action myself.

I've gone through the thread and dealt with posts I think need dealing with. The users in that thread (well, some of them at least) are taking it too far with the user in question and at it's extreme, I'd say it could be classed as bullying.

As the users didn't really insult the user or be rude to them, I've had to put any warnings/PM's/infractions down as posting to cause arguments. If this continues with the user in question, I will escalate this to management and get it looked into as bullying.

I see this too sometimes. I had a thread closed a while ago to stop arguments which from my understanding I could not see any in the two page thread. I contacted the moderator and I was told it was to prevent arguments, looking at it all I saw was some off-topic conversation towards the end of the thread.

As a general rule, users know exactly what they're doing when they veer a thread off-topic, or keep arguing within it. If possible, rule-breaking should be dealt with, and the thread allowed to steer itself back on track - however, at times (and this is at the Moderator's discretion) it must be locked, either to prevent further rules being broken, or to stop its off-topic progress.

If someone is an active participant in rule-breaking in their own thread, then I (normally) will PM them to let them know their thread's been closed, telling them why, and warning them not to do it again - sometimes as part of an Infraction PM. If it's not their fault, then I'll let them know why, and invite them to recreate it if they so choose.

Finally, the reason why, sometimes, threads get locked and nothing appears to have been done about rule-breaking, is because Infractions can't be given for individual instances of pointless posting, they must be sustained, and are generally dealt with by a Super Moderator, sometimes by way of a Caution/Temporary Ban. An S-Mod may not have the inclination to spend half an hour editing every single pointless post, and simply link to them in a Caution/Ban instead.

Even if you can't see edits, warnings/bans may still take place.
