Can my current employer find out that I've applied for another job? Because I don't want them to know just in case I don't get it.

Whenever I've interviewed for a job and have been successful it has always been 'subject to references' so they wait until they took me on before contacting my previous employer... by then I've already handed in my resignation so it wasn't so bad

If you put them as a reference the manager of the place you've applied for may contact your current manager.
