For the total cost it would be 5(pence) x the amount of sweets so it'd be d) 5x

Basically if Shamonti buys 1 sweet, the price would be 5 pence.
If Shamonti buys 2 sweets, the price would be 5 pence + 5 pence = 10 pence.
So if you substitute the amount of sweets with x, the equation for the total price would be x amount of 5 pence added together, which is 5*x, which is simplified to 5x.

The answer is therefore E) 5x

haha I think thats more complicated.

    1 sweet = x
    2 sweets = 2x
    3 sweets = 3x
    4 sweets = 4x
    5 sweets = 5x

If a sweet costs 10p, and you buy say 10, you are going to pay:

    10 sweets * 10p = 100p

    so lets say x = 10

now if you buy 5 sweets
    it becomes

    5 sweets * x = 5x ... which is the same as 5*10p = 50p

    Hope that explains it.
