Why aren't referral links allowed?

I know most forums adopt this kind of rule but don't you think it's a bit harsh?

That's not the answer i'm looking for. Why is refferal links so bad that it's not allowed?

I've seen a few mods looking at this thread and i don't think no one has the answer.

Well they were banned here:

because of the sheer volume of them they were spamming up the forum and there were a lot of complaints. The other reason was that 'pointless' rep was being given out.
