Default EU agrees on internet and telecoms user rights

    http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news...1106-i0pp.html

Under the draft bill, authorities would no longer be able to cut off Internet services to users without providing evidence of illegal downloading or other activity.
The draft law will also boost privacy and consumer rights, make it easier for customers to switch telecoms providers and increase competition for Internet and phone services.

The revised deal stresses that "citizens in the EU are entitled to a prior fair and impartial procedure, including the right to be heard, and they have a right to an effective and timely judicial review."
New rules on switching mobile or fixed phone providers are also likely to be broadly welcomed, at least by consumers, who will have the right to change companies in one working day.
It currently takes over a week on average.
When changing providers customers will also have the right to keep their old phone number.
The new telecoms rules will also ensure that European consumers have an "ever greater choice" of competing broadband service providers, according to the joint statement.

This isn't any different in the UK already, you can switch telephone and broadband providers quite easily and you cannot be punished for downloading pirated things without proof. So this doesn't really effect the UK as much as it would places like The Netherlands, or Sweden (or is it Switzerland? If so, they're not apart of the EU).

I know this is more aimed at the UK but:

In 2004, 32.2 million singles were sold in the UK. In 2009, 117 million singles have been sold in the UK.
Then we get moaned at how they are suffering from piracy? Pfft!

tbh, there's probably less piracy on music than people buying it... well that's what it seems like

but yeah, good move by the EU here

Well at the moment you can wait anything up to a week or two to change providers (from my friends experience.) So a legal requirement to change providers in a matter of a day would be welcomed. Plus this stops unfair and unjust laws headed by lord mandelson and in france.
