Washington sniper faces execution later

The man behind the 2002 sniper attacks in and around Washington DC will be put to death later, after a last-ditch appeal was thrown out. John Allen Muhammad's lawyers say he is mentally ill, but Virginia Governor Tim Kaine rejected a plea for clemency. On Monday, the US Supreme Court quashed an appeal for a stay of execution.
Muhammad, 48, will face a lethal injection for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers, one of 10 people killed during the attacks. Muhammad's accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, is serving a life sentence in jail.

If he's mentally ill, maybe he doesn't even fear death? Even if he is scared, not really a punishment at all as it'll be painless and all over very soon.

He isn't mentally ill, he has asked his lawyers to lie so he won't be put to death - he clearly fears death.

If he had been found mentally ill, when he wasn't, he would have found his life from that point on (due to the severity of his crime) to be awful. My point being mental institutions can be far worse than prison.
