Do you have it on a sold surface? I.e a wooden desk?

If it's on carpet or cotton the vents will be blocked.

Most of the time I'm in my bed and it rests on top of me (quilt cover beneath the laptop)

sometimes I'm downstairs watching TV on the sofa and its placing on a pillow.

I get scared and end up turning it off "/

The quilt cover does it, it's blocking the vents as someone said, try finding something solid like, a book or something to put it on top of, should keep it off the quilt and cool it a bit, the same as the pillow, put it on something solid like, a table mat.

The main things I can think of is.... you could have too much running on it at the same time causing it to work harder and it becomes hot. You have it on a unbalanced surface like your lap, a quilt or something where as the fans can't work properlly, or your just on it too long?
I'm burnin' up for you baby.

Ye as Mike said the vents on the bottom of the laptop so having it on soft surfaces i.e. legs, cushion etc will block the vent making it heat up. It does say in manuals to keep it on a hard surface i.e. table, tray etc to prevent the fan from being blocked which can lead to the motherboard overheating aka dead laptop.

Allow the fan to have allot of space to breathe, also I would say clean your fan but you only got it for Christmas so surely that can't be the problem.
