It's totally outrageous that there are ten Best Picture nominees, though this was announced months ago. The only real surprise for the category is to see District 9 on there, but it feels thrown on the list. It doesn't have a hope in hell of winning.

My predictions for the major awards...

Best Picture: Avatar (though the worst film nominated by a clear mile)

Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker

Actor in a Leading Role: Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart

Actress in a Leading Role: Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia

Actor in a Supporting Role: Christoph Waltz for Inglourious *******s

Actress in a Supporting Role: Mo'Nique for Precious

Adapted Screenplay: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for Up in the Air

Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious *******s

Not sure why Invictus is up for two when the film is pretty awful.

These aren't really predictions, just what I think.

    Best Picture
    District 9

    Best Direction
    Inglourious *******s — Quentin Tarantino

    Actor in a Leading Role
    Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart

    Actress in a Leading Role
Gabourey Sidibe in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
(haven't seen any of them but I've heard the most hype from that)

    Actor in a Supporting Role
    Christoph Waltz in Inglourious *******s

    Actress in a Supporting Role
Mo’Nique in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire

    Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
District 9 — Written by Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell

    Writing (Original Screenplay)
Up — Screenplay by Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Story by Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Tom McCarthy

Haven't seen a lot of them though and to be honest I'm not sure what those last two awards are.

Screenplay = a film script. Original as in completely original script, adapted means adapted from source material like a novel.

Surprised The Lovely Bones only got one nomination, although I'm happy it was for Stanley Tucci as the Best Supporting Actor. I was hoping Saoirse Ronan would get nominated as well, but I guess it was not meant to be.

I think District 9 has a shot at adapted screenplay. It also got nominated for Editing and Visual Effects, which it will of course lose to Avatar. No idea why Harry Potter got nominated for cinematography. Perhaps I need to watch it again but I don't remember it standing out much. Surely there has been better cinematography in a lot of films this year. They forget about The Lovely Bones? Watchmen? Actually Watchmen probably misses out due to its release date. Shame because it obviously had a shot at Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Blind Side is only there because a Police Academy film wasn't made this year.

I love Saoirse Ronan, shes already got one oscar nomination under her belt, and I'm sure she'll have loads more in her inevitably long career. I really need to get round to seeing the film, though a lot of people have told me that although it follows the book closely, its in a completely different mood and direction which kinda puts me off a bit.

I don't like the fact that there are ten nominations this time around. I didnt think it would work when it was announced and now looking at the nominations I think most people could probably determine which are the golden five rather than the five that just got it thanks to the rule change. Having said that there are a load of worthy nominees this year which is always good.
    Sammeth.
