Is it better to encode a video in a .mkv container with ffmpeg or x264? I know h.264 usually takes up space but that's no problem, I just want the best quality resolution possible.

Also, any idea why in HandBrake the kbps of AC3 audio is 32kbps only? I thought that only AC3 supported 5.1 so I don't want to have to reencode anything that I've had to do in AAC.

EDIT: Oh and is it possible to play back on the 360 or PS3? I usually stream through either of these.

If you stream MKV files from your PC using something like Tversity Media Server then it will convert them on-the-fly.

    Handbrake, I'm not sure.

    I'd use x264.

How are you converting MKV files?
