    It is mostly incompatible. Don't buy it tomorrow. I don't have time to suggest alternatives now though.

    Not necessarily. If he doesn't do something like video encoding on a regular basis, it wouldn't be worth it.

    Get a Phenom, though.

    The new ones are phenom's and are not much more expensive than the quad core versions (the lowest model, anyway). You can grab one for about £155.
