    Default first car.

starting my driving lessons soon, probably a bit too soon to drink of a first car but i was wondering how much i'll usually need for a decent first car + insurance - i'm estimating around 5 grand.

drink? I assume you mean dream lol.

Depends what type of car you want, which will also impact on your budget as the type of car will directly affect your insurance.
I'd go for a small 1-1.2 litre car as a first car.

    Here are a few examples;
    Vauxhall Corsa
    Renault Clio
    Toyota Yarris
    Vauxhall Astra

5 grand is a bit much to be spending on a first car (after all, your first cars is what you cut your teeth on and youll probably make a lot of daft mistakes with it).

I'd say about 2-3 grand is a good amount for a first car. Don't go for anything bigger than a 1.3 or anything bigger than a Fiesta or equivalent.

    Possibilities:
    Ford Ka
    Ford Fiesta
    Vauxhall Corsa
    Fiat Punto
    VW Polo
Renault Clio (I own one of these)
    Citroen Saxo / Citroen C2
    Peugeot 106
    Peugeot 206
    Toyota Yaris
    Skoda Fabia
    Seat Ibiza etc etc

don't get a corsa. they're just typical student cars.

^^ there's always rich kid exceptions wherever you go! i have an 18 year old mate who has a brand new Corsa, and a boy in my year's parents bought him a brand new Fiat 500

Clio is a brilliant car, mines a 2003 model Dynamique, fantastic little thing to drive, comfortable, cheap to insure and quite a lot of toys (auto wipers, auto headlights, alloys, front fogs, cd) plus it looks ace!

If you can stretch your budget to around 6k you can get a mazda 2 . Heres a picture of mine which im picking up tomorrow morning .
Id suggest you look at a fiesta aswell as they are great little cars and youll be able to get a decent one that will be a great little runaround for a few years.
