Default The younger you are, the higher the noise pitch you can here

I was on holiday about two years ago with my family in Cyprus. We were walking down the beach at the front of the hotel when me and my cousins kept complaining about this annoying, really loud screechy noise that just wouldn't stop but our parents and grandparents couldn't hear it. They thought we were joking. Later on when we got talking to some other teenagers who were staying at the same hotel and we told them about it - they'd experienced the same thing. Anyone else had an similar experience?

(i'm coming out with some proper weird threads tonight) :S

Yeah I thought this was fairly common knowledge. It's how "The Mosquito" functions, it's this alarm which was in the news a few years back. Shop keepers attach it to the outside of their shop and when they want to move children or teenagers from outside the shop it plays a very high pitched noise which irritates them and they move away. Adults however cannot hear the noise and will not be affected by it.

You can find out more here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito

You can also get ringtones which play a very high pitched sound, so in theory only people under a certain age can hear them. For example they could go off in school lessons and only the students would hear them, not the teacher

Well I have used dog whistle apps at school so it plays a really high pitched noise and the teacher can never hear it assuming they are 30+, but it's not long before they figure out whats going on. Also I think what you experienced was a device used to prevent young people from hanging around certain places at night, they are trying to get them in more places in the UK.

Edit: Lol at how similar our posts are ^.

It must be a holiday thing.

When I was in school there was a ringtone that went around and it was really popular (and annoying). A high pitched screech that went on for aaages. The teachers wouldn't do anything about it because they couldn't hear it so it'd just cause big arguments in class. Funny times.
