Default Downloaded iOS 4.1 but now making me download again?

With it taking 5 hours to download the latest iPhone software (my internet speed is 0.3mbps) I left it downloading overnight to restore and update my old iPhone which I have sold. So I obviously downloaded the latest iPhone software onto my computer. Now I am trying to update the iPhone I use to the latest software however it is having to download it all again. If I have already downloaded the file once then why is it wanting to download it again? Unless the iPhone 4 has to have a different software file than the 3GS, this just doesn't make sense... I am running Mac OS X 10.6.4 if that helps. I really do not want to download this file again as it makes my internet so slow that it is literally unusable. I am hoping that I can somehow manually find the file and shove it in itunes face so it knows it has already downloaded it before!! Thanks.

Sorry for the double post. Thanks for moving my thread, guess it is kind of 50/50 where it belongs as it is about my portable device software but may well be a problem on my desktop. Hopefully someone is more likely to answer now as I really want 4.1!

Forgot to mention that I installed the latest version of iTunes after I had downloaded 4.1 to restore my old phone with. Is it possible that updating my iTunes has deleted or forgotten about the 4.1 it has already downloaded? It takes 5 hours to download and my mum wouldn't be too happy if I started it now before I go to sleep because she stays up late and it would make her computer mega slow. Really wanted to check out the game centre.

Yes iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS have their own type o firmware, even though they're named the same (4.1) their is different specifications for each iPhone.

    Thankyou!!

Wasn't the answer I was looking for because it means 5 hours of slow internet, at least I know there isn't something else I can do.

Because my house is old and decrepit so I think it might be the old wires as we live about a mile away from civilisation.

There really is nothing they can do for us, they aren't exactly going to dig up all the old wires and replace them for 1 customer. I get up to 3mbps through my T-Mobile dongle so I use that most of the time, it is maxed out at the moment so it restricts my use on it.

So you use dial up? Within the next few years the government, 'intends' to have fibre optic cables covering most if the UK including rural areas so you amay be in luck soon.
