Star Wars Saga being released in 3-D

Lucasfilm has been teasing us for years, but now it’s finally official. The ‘Star Wars’ Saga will be re-released into theaters in…..(wait for it)…..3D!!! Yep, in George Lucas’s never ending quest for more money the entire saga will be converted into 3D and kick off in 2012 with Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. No release date has been announced, but it will be presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Lucas Ltd., the “cutting edge conversion” will be supervised by Industrial Light & Magic.

“There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the ‘Star Wars Saga’ has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive,” said the statement

Well, whoever from Lucas Ltd. made that statement is certainly right. Though, I don’t know about you, but I’m not entirely sure I want to see Jar-Jar in 3D. The Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012. Lucas announces we will see Jar Jar in 3D in 2012. Coincidence?

I'm not really bothered about the 3-D thing but i'm happy that Star Wars is being put back into theatres

Not sure who wants to see this. Totally unnecassary. 2D over 3D any day of the week. Lucas is such a moron, and at this rate he won't even live to see Return of the Jedi re-released.

I agree with the 2D over 3D bit, but i'm still happy that it's coming out cause I wanna see them on the big screen again.

Shameless profiteering, it's clearly just a way to make lots more money. He's milked the Star Wars franchise into oblivion and just wants to milk it a little bit harder. I'm with Alex on this one - only going to see it because I am glad that Star Wars is hitting the big screen again, and it will be great to experience episodes IV, V, and VI in the cinema given that I wasn't around when they were released the first time! But 3D does ruin the whole experience!

Anyways, I'm not sure what to think of this. I have been a super star wars nerd and fan for most of my life. I have seen all of the 6 films in the cinema a few years ago (episode 3 premier). I will certainly see the movies again in 3D, however I'm not sure the films will have the same kind of "magic" as they did all those years ago in 2D. I hope that there will be an option to see them in 2D again on the big screen once more, so that I can watch both 2D and 3D and see what I think.

I'm pretty much neutral on this topic. I don't see much of a point, but if the 3D conversion is being supervised by ILM, it might be worth taking a look at.

Surely the blu-ray remastering is more than important. They're restoring the 'Special Editions' to HD but not the original versions? That's one of the biggest gripes I have with Star Wars, not just how Lucas *******ized it into oblivion. I think that the first two prequels are some of the worst films ever made and a ruddy disappointment to fans everywhere, although Episode III was a ruddy good improvement. I wasn't too keen on Return of the Jedi so perhaps Episode III upstages it in some areas.
