William Hague: no UK referendum on EU treaty changes

Changes to the fundamental rules of the European Union will not lead to a British referendum, William Hague has insisted.

Mr Hague insisted that the Coalition does not intend to grant a referendum on the changes put forward by Angela Merkel

The Foreign Secretary said the Coalition will reject the demands of Conservative MPs for a popular vote on proposed changes to the EU’s treaties. David Cameron has signalled he is prepared to give his consent to a German plan to alter the EU’s basic rules to support the euro. The Conservatives have promised a referendum on any transfer of British sovereignty to Brussels, and some Tory MPs will this week demand such a vote. Ministers insist that the German plan does not justify a British vote because it affects only eurozone countries and has no impact on the UK.

Mr Hague insisted that the Coalition does not intend to grant a referendum on the changes put forward by Angela Merkel, the German chancellor. “As proposed, it would not give rise to a referendum,” he said in a BBC interview.
“What is being proposed by Angela Merkel does not affect the United Kingdom and the powers of the United Kingdom.” The Commons will on Wednesday debate recent developments in the EU, including “economic governance” proposals that would increase European surveillance of individual nations’ budgets. In the latest test of Coalition unity over Europe, Conservative MPs may attempt to amend or even reject the motion, leaving ministers facing an open revolt.
I remember when the Consitution Lisbon Treaty was pushed through parliament without our promised referendum, and the Labour government said the exact same thing 'oh it doesnt hand any powers away to Brussels' but it did just that - Labour were hammered by the Tories back then for that very issue.

If David Cameron was sincere, he could use this as a chance to bargain much as the French do - hand back areas of sovereignty to the elected British government or we refuse to pass this treaty (or we'll put it to a referendum which would mean it would be knocked back). But no, Davey boy won't do that because like the usual Lib/Lab/Con - they'll promise you the earth before they get the keys to number 10, but will have no issues with treating us like a bunch of mugs. Then again we keep voting for them so the joke is on us.

Anyone remember cast-iron Dave before he was in office?

    Thoughts?

The difference is the Lisbon Treaty did involve a transfer of power to Brussels. From what I've seen, there is absolutely none in this treaty seeing as it only affects Eurozone countries so it doesn't really justify a referendum as it'd be for no apparent reason. I'm surprised we have a say at all on the Eurozone tbh, if I was a country in the Euro I'd be none too pleased about countries who aren't part of the Euro dictating what goes on.

So they say, but Herman Van Rompuy was calling for economic governance from this treaty change to give more control to the EU over national budgets.

This was a great chance for Cameron to bargain back powers (as the French have done throughout the history of the EU using methods such as this).

Go and read some books/watch some videos, go think for yourself instead of listening to what your parents think concerning the Labour Party - and then come back when you've got a mind of your own and something intelligent to say.

    Reckon you can do that?
