The lower the number, the shorter. Grade 1 is basically barely any hair, grade 3 would be for spiking hair up, etc.

I'd say 1 is a grade four and 2 a grade three.

number one isn't cut by clippers, but if it was is likely to be a grade four.
number two is cut by clippers, and likely to be a 2 blended into a 2.5 to 3.

the grades can go upto grade eight... this is what they stand for in millimetres and inches :-
1 - 3mm or 1/8th inch
2 - 6 mm or 1/4 inch
3 - 10mm or 3/8 inch
4 - 13mm or 1/2 inch
5 - 16mm or 5/8 inch
6 - 19mm or 3/4 inch
7 - 22mm or 7/8 inch
8 - 25mm or 1 inch

Different barbers/hairdressers tend to vary a bit though in my experience.

you often find women don't cut 'right into the wood' because they've never had clippers used on them, so they don't lean in hard enough and often leave bits uncut. don't mean to be sexist!

I think casanova pretty much explained it really. I've never got it either, but I guess it does vary in some places. My hair clipper thingee attatchments say on them the number they are and the "mm" rating etc
