Armed student holding hostages

MARINETTE, Wis. — An armed student burst into a high school classroom and took hostages in eastern Wisconsin on Monday, an emergency management official said.

A Marinette High School administrator called authorities shortly after 3 p.m. to say a student had taken over a classroom, according to county emergency management director Eric Burmeister. The police chief later said there are 23 students and 1 teacher in the class. No injuries had been reported Monday evening.

Choral teacher Bonita Weydt said she was talking with a teacher in another classroom after school, which lets out about 3:10 p.m., when principal Corry Lambie came in.
"I said, 'Corry, what's going on?' and he said, `Get out of the building,"' Weydt said.

Burmeister said parents were asked to gather at the county courthouse.

Marinette is about 50 miles north of Green Bay and sits on the border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The high school has an annual enrollment of approximately 800 students, according to its website.

Another one off his rocker, but it must be said - this is no reason to introduce draconian searches at school gates turning them into camps rather than schools. The sad fact of life is that we cannot do anything about people like this, just as I could go in to school tommorow and knife my class - there is no way of preventing/predicting something like this in a lot of cases.

An administrator at Marinette High School called the authorities shortly after 1500 (2100 GMT) to say a student with a handgun had taken over a room.

Marinette Police Chief Jeff Skorik told reporters that hostage negotiators were inside the school, and that there had not been any threats or demands made.

No gunfire or injuries have been reported since the stand-off began.

The police have blocked off roads near the school, and local media report that a Swat team has been called to the scene from Green Bay.

It is not known if the gunman was supposed to be in the classroom where the hostages are being held. He does not have any police history.

Chief Skorik said that all contact between the armed student and the negotiating team had been through the female teacher held hostage.

"We have no idea as far as motivations at this point," he said. "We want to encourage this young man... to come out."

Parents have been asked to go to the local courthouse if they have not been in contact with their children. Meanwhile, dozens of people continue to gather near the school, hoping to find out what is going on.

Marinette isn't too far away from me; I actually know a guy that goes there. He told me that it was a Sophomore class that was taken hostage but he didn't have a clue who the gunman was.

Kinda scary when someone you know is so close to something like this. I mean sure he wasn't one of the captives or anything, but still...

After a stand-off lasting five hours, Marinette Police Chief Jeff Skorik said all the hostages had been released.

The perpetrator was a 15-year-old student at the school who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He is now received treating in hospital, where his parents are with him, Police Chief Skorik said.

None of the hostages were wounded, although several shots were fired from the two weapons the student was carrying.
