    Exclamation User Ranks

Why on earth do the ranks go -
    - Gold
    - Ruby
    - Sapphire
    - Emerald
    - Platinum
    - Habbox God

I really don't understand why when you first join, you become a gold member immediately. Gold usually signals wealth and power. Surely therefore Gold should be a higher user rank. Also, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald don't really, to me signal any inner feelings in terms of for example, it's better than gold, it's worth a lot, and so on.... Frankly I have no idea which one is worth more than the other!

So why not use the common metals which are always associated with being better than the other? That with the addition of Platinum and Habbox God.

In short, rather than my overly complicated and badly written paragraph. Why don't the ranks go -
    - Bronze
    - Silver
    - Gold
    - Emerald
    - Platinum
    - Habbox God

To me, this makes more sense and given that bronze isn't really considered anything amazing, silver is slightly better but not great, and gold should be respected.

I think this summarises my feelings today -.

It was once Bronze Silver Gold then the other ranks, I can't remember when it changed or why it changed and the Search is giving me errors right now so I can't check either. But I'll assume there was a reason for removing the first two, perhaps to make members feel valued. Maybe I even did it and don't remember, but I think it happened later. I think the reason might have been very related to what you pointed out:

To me, this makes more sense and given that bronze isn't really considered anything amazing, silver is slightly better but not great, and gold should be respected.
I would think that management sought to avoid classifying any users as "nothing amazing" or "slightly better but not great". The message sent shouldn't be being classified as an inferior member based on your post count.

As far as Ruby etc. it went Metals, then Gems, hence the progression from Bronze Silver Gold to Ruby Sapphire Emerald.

New members need not be at the bottom of the pile which is why the ranks were changed to begin at Gold Member, you say "Gold should be respected" - why the should new members not be respected?, you say bronze isn't "anything amazing" - that's quite insulting to new members.

The rest of the suggestions are quite pedantic really, it's an order of usergroups it's in no way to signify who is better etc - if we wanted that we'd go for a full blown class system.

No I'm saying that as a general view of the metals themselves.

Getting a new user rank should be rewarding.

I'm not using the idea of basing a user on their post count, it just seems stupid.

When I joined this forum I wasn't insulted by my user rank.

It is rewarding, you know which ranks come after one another and moving up a rank is an accomplishment. Once you hit Ruby you know you've moved up in the world from the likes of the Metals ranks to the Gems ranks. Outgrown your forum adolescence so to speak

The entire change was a joke, which I seem to remember Jke and Oli fronting quite heavily.

It was all to make 'new users feel better' - which in itself is the most preposterous comment ever. Virtually EVERY forum has bronze, silver and gold - the whole removing of bronze was, and still is, insane.

With the rep bar thing that is currently being debated - god knows why such a thing is allowed - we wouldn't want new users being put down that they only have one dark green bar :S Why not make it a nice bright blue - just to make them feel good?

While I think that it was a tiny bit unecessary changing the ranks like that (especially because the reason more were added in the first place was to allow even more advancement opportunities and to raise the ranks), I also don't think that it was that destructive to the forum, apart from the possible aforementioned problem.

Is it really that much of a problem that it starts with Gold? I personally wouldn't have supported the change, but now that it's done, is it that big an issue?

Please don't, you're offending my user rank and my reputation.

    Ridiculous.

It was only introduced in at the request of the members only last May. I found a post while looking in which you didn't like it there either .

This is when it was introduced.

It was considered over a period of time and I can't think of anybody complaining about it until today. In fact everybody has enjoyed the new more generous avatar and signature limits. It was a very good move - members feel valuable as soon as they have posted a few times.
