    Red face My iPhone 3GS

    Hello,

I'm currently on a SIM only contract on O2. I recently bought an iPhone 3GS 8GB (with 3.1.3 software) which is locked to Orange. I was under the impression that I was able to buy an unlock code, but apparently, from what I've read that is not the case. I have to "jailbreak" the device in order to do it.

I use to own an iPod Touch which I jailbreaked, that was simple enough. But is it worth doing it for the phone? Should I just sell it on and buy another iPhone which is locked to O2 instead (or even unlocked)?

I'm no expert, so don't be too harsh on me if this is quite stupid!

Try taking it back if you can, otherwise jailbreak and unlock and stick your o2 SIM in.

Orange will unlock your iPhone for £20 last time I checked. Ring 07973 100150 and tell them you want to unlock it. You should only need the IMEI, it could take 7-10 days though, but it will be a "proper" unlock forever and you won't need to mess around with jailbreaking.

If your going to jailbreak it anyway then its worth just downloading UltraSn0w otherwise if you plan on not jailbreaking then you can like mentioned above go to Orange and get it unlocked or im sure independent mobile phone shops do them pretty cheap too.

Thanks all, managed to unlock it using Redsn0w. It told me doing so will void any Apple warranties ... d'oh! The microphone didn't work on the iPhone, and I only realised AFTER I had unlocked it so I sent it back to the guy for a refund and he's going to try and take it to Apple to see if it can be fixed... not looking good.

Did you wipe the device before you sent it back? -___-

Yeah, if you restored the device Apple wouldn't have been able to tell it was jailbroken. The only way the Apple store can tell is if they see Cydia or whatever on the homescreen, they don't run any diagnostics or anything people spread rumours about.
