If you're not using the latest image of ubuntu use the latest image, if you are then it is incompatible with your laptop and you should go about using Windows Genuine Software at your earliest convenience.

    I was using 10.10

Didn't have trouble installing 10.04 a while ago on it and since it's LTS I might aswell go for that over 10.10 then

That's funny, because I have not managed to do a 10.10 install successfully yet. Not even a Live CD works properly.

Yet 10.04 LTS worked every time.

I know what I'm going to say might not be very helpful, but have you tried other distributions such as Fedora, CentOS and Debian?

As said, give Fedora a try.

Ubuntu sucks anyway, I'm diggin' openSuSE at the moment
