Probably because they didn't predict that it would develop to multiple cores. Wouldn't really be a point in having a processor that fast yet with the entire system pretty much bottlenecking it.
Interesting, but pretty standard for technology predictions to be overestimated, according to Space Odessy 2001 we should have a base on the moon by now.

If 10 GHz is the best that Intel can do by 2011, AMD or somebody else is going to eat their lunch. Intel better pick up the pace if they want to remain dominant. Besides, I want it NOW.
