Dad driving my car..

So I bought a 2007 BMW 328i in March. I bought it in Canada because I go to school up there and my dad lives up there. I go home to the USA for the summer and opted not to take it with me because I didn't want to go through the hassle of taking a Canadian car with Canadian plates and use an American passport to cross the border.. would have been far too much trouble.

My dad had a 3-series too, but his lease was up in April and before leasing another one he wanted to wait for the 2012's to come out so he would have brand new one. My dad also has an SUV and he was like I'll just drive the SUV and if I have to drive the car I will.. I didn't have a problem with my dad driving it, especially since he co-signed for the loan and just bought me a new set of tires for it.. ANYWAY, my dad split-up with his girlfriend in like November but she's been harassing him and being a downright ***** to him, anyway since my dad is a softy she was like I NEED THE SUV and my dad loaned it to her. ANYWAY, she refuses to give it back and they're going through court and eventually once everything is settled he'll get it back.

That leaves my dad with one vehicle: mine. He works primarily in the city but somebody in one of the offices in Moncton is sick so my dad has to work up there on Tuesday and Wednesday.. so my dad has to drive 1400KM a week + whatever he's driving in the city. I really feel bad for my dad because he has a car ordered, his ex-girlfriend took his car and he's really stressed over work. My dad told me not to worry about it but I've been driving used, high-mileage cars my entire life and then I get a low mileage one that I intend on keeping for a long time... Do you guys care about the mileage on your car if you're not the one putting it on?

It's not your dads fault, it's his ex girlfriends, I think you will just have to put up with it for a while. I don't really care about the mileage, a cars a car, i've got a 2003 peugeot 206 which has godknows how many miles, i'm just happy to have one. Althought it must be a little annoying for you haha.

Tell the ****** to give you your car back! I do mind about mileage on a car. Mines is January 2010 registered and is currently sitting on 14.5k which I'd say is about average. I'd never touch anything with mileage disproportionate to its' age, for example, an '09 car with 80k miles would be a definite nono from me.

I care more about the fact my mum ruins my mpg than mileage.... i average 45, when shes been in it it goes down to like 32!!!

I can see where you're coming from about mileage, but personally I'd let my dad use my car if he needed to, he's done so much for me over the years

Mileage means nothing as long as it's been looked after properly. I bought mine about a year and a half ago with 38k and now it's on 70k, but it's been serviced every 10k miles and bits that needed replaced have been replaced.

I know my dad is getting the oil changed, he's a stickler for stuff like that. It goes in every 5000 miles for a synthetic oil change which is great. I wish it was as simple as telling her to give back the Escalade, but it's not. Dad has tried to find the truck but he can't, she hid it. The situation is screwed up.. I'm driving a 2007 Toyota Camry (Aurion) V6 right now and it's got over 200k on it, it has a slight tick in the engine but once you get it on the highway it's fine. The thing with my dad is we only really started talking again but we've been doing really good and my brothers keep telling me that he's a good person and not to worry about it he'll make it up to you.. I really love that car because I'm paying for it myself and it's MINE lol

If it was just his girlfriend, can't he contact the police saying he gave her a loan of the car for a small period of time and has yet to return it so technically it could go under theft?

It'd be a different story if it's his wife, since it's not, he's not committed to anything so doesn't have to give her jack ****.

She claims they were common law, they weren't.

Can't he follow her? If she's hiding I would be inclined to follow her around to where the car is actually parked. It's his car, he can take it back by force. If not, call the police as she's thieving
