Default BUILD: Windows 8 (Developer Preview)

So did anyone else watch the BUILD steam on buildwindows.com? I know I did and two other members on the forum did with me. I have to say, Microsoft have done a very good job so far on Windows 8. It looks fantastic and some of the features I really can't wait to try out. I'm so going to get the developer preview and see what it is like, yes I know it's just a preview.

"In 1995, Windows changed the PC. BUILD will show you that Windows 8 changes everything."

There is many many articles on the internet with a lot of videos and screenshots of what they showed.

Note: This is still pre-release, the version that will be downloadable is a developer pre-release. This isn't Beta or final.

Apple doesn't have **** on this. This truly is the post-PC era if MS can keep this going IMO, one device you can easily dock anywhere as your main PC and then use on the sofa, kitchen etc.

Perhaps iOS will slowly start losing market share to this, considering it's a lot more user friendly in terms of what it can actually do in comparison to iOS and the hardware the tablets are going to sport (USB, HDMI, etc etc).

I am interested in how they're advertising deving in js for desktop apps. Does anyone know if you need an MSDN account to download Windows 8 tomorrow? If so I'll be hoping the torrents are up within the day.

What do you mean? Hasn't Apple been selling tablets for abit now and Google with Android?

There is no activation and at the moment we think it may be open to anyone to download it. But if it's on torrents then fair do's as Microsoft stated there is no activation anyway.

What I mean, is that Apple's current tablet software is nowhere near anything like what we've seen with Windows 8 so far. Imagine being able to use your Windows PC generally, docked with a keyboard and mouse, then just pulling it out, it switching to Metro UI so that you can just go lounge around in your living room or something, or take it to work. One device to do everything would be great.

I think we're already seeing Apple begin converting OS X into a tablet platform, especially with Lion and I had thought you mentioned not liking how they're changing it into a mobile platform in ways (if you didn't say that I know there's a lot of folks who did). I think that's going to come into play at one point or another. Anyways with Windows 8 and what you said about the full power of a desktop platform it's something I'm looking forward to but only if tablet producers are willing to match the iPad in battery life (important to me!). I'd also like to see if the ARM version of 8 is watered down in any ways. I'd like to eventually be able to play games on a Windows 8 tablet for instance. A concern would be if game producers don't port engines over to run on the ARM architecture and excluded support for Windows 8 on ARM. I think if companies start doing that in the future it would devastate me .

So anyways for University next year I'll be deciding between a MacBook or a Windows 8 tablet and I am determined to wait until then before I buy any more computers/tablets (*ignores fact that I just bought a potential 3 HP TouchPads).

I have a fairly older but expensive at the time ASUS EEE 901 netbook kicking around and I'd like to see how that runs 8. That quick boot they did before was that on an SSD or HD with a BIOS or an EFI? Do we know if that's going to be included in the public release?

In terms of the bottom part of your post aimed at me.

The quick boots have been shown on EFI, I'm not sure if they did show BIOS but there should be improvements on both. In the dev preview there should be some sort of quick booting which you have seen in previous videos and in the demos today:

On the Dev tablet/computer they handed out with the preview version installed.

The Netbook in question has two SSDs, one very fast 4GB and one slower SSD of 16GB. If I can even fit the OS on either it would be nice but it will be interesting to see how fast it boots on a fresh install on an atom. When I originally got it, it came shipped with XP and after installing Tiny XP on the 4GB SSD boot times on a fresh install ranged between 10 and 15 seconds.

One of the things that made people laugh:

Sinofsky on IE10: "It's completely chromeless, and I don't think anything is better than entirely Chrome-free browsing experience."

(It wasn't actually intended to be a dig at Google Chrome, before someone takes it too serious)
