Contract Writing?

Hi there

I aim to hopefully launch my new radio station in the next few months, and will be using presenters both from other cities, even countries etc but also have a studio, which will be in use at certain times (smaller to begin with but we aim to eventually have mainly studio based shows).

Because we will be licensed, I want to create a contract that all the online/studio presenters have to sign. This will have stuff such as the rules our licenses have and stuff to prevent users from downloading illegally - e.g. if they where caught our contract would mean they where responsible (sadly with online presenters its hard to know who downloads and who doesn't).

Now a lecturer once told me that anything in writing can be used as an agreement but I've also heard otherwise, and often contracts have holes inside them.

Is there certain stuff I'll need in. I've done a rough draft with basically all the rules and stuff, but as I don't really do contracts or law based stuff, I have no idea what is needed to make it official.

you mention lecturers, if yr still at uni i would suggest maybe wandering over to the law department at yr uni (if there is one), you could pay quite a bit of money for legal advice but if you had a good law student, sorted.

Having said that any contracts can only be signed by people 18 or over otherwise their parents would have to sign for them.

Thanks guys. Sadly I graduated this year from University, well officially graduate next month. One of the problems is the studio, because it won't be at home, so I'm not sure if I need a load of health and safety aspects into it.

Citizens advice bureau could help you on that aspect potentially. Not quite sure though, but I'm certain advice for that is easily available online.

You maybe need the help of small business advisor. There are usually some in the local area. There maybe someone at Uni that can help - do they have a small business centre? You do need advice as there are all sorts of things to consider including public liability insurance etc etc.

If you're going into this seriously I would get someone in who knows what they're doing... an extra cost yes but it could save your ass in the long run.

I am not sure how seriously you are considering this as a business prospect but I think you need to have a serious consideration of a wide range of external furthers before you proceed any further or spend any more money on it.

You clearly have a good original business plan and idea that you want to use - however, have you formally sat down and planned out everything? Have you considered all aspects of the business ie. how it will make money, when it will be broadcast etc. You will find a range of business plan templates online and I think you should perhaps do one - even for your own benefit as it will raise some questions you maybe haven't considered.

Secondly - if you are actually offering a place of employment ie. a physical studio of which presenters will physically turn up and present in - you will need to seriously consider a number of legal implications as Catzsy mentioned.

I think the problem is you are crossing the line from a private, internal radio station for which people can remotely access into being a small business - and as such need to take all precuationary measures as such.
