    Default Do you think that...

Female artists are always pitted against each other by fans/the media, when males are never forcefully involved in stupid competition like that? And if so, why do you think this is?

It's something I've been interested in for a while, and I don't really understand. Bjork brought it up recently in an interview:

Björk: There is room for everything. Something that is quite common though, and I’ve noticed it even though things have changed a lot, is that there always seems to be room for a lot of male singers, and they don’t get asked to duel.

You have Jay-Z and Kanye West being best mates. There’s always room for many male characters.

DiS: Whereas women tend to be pitted against one another?

Björk: Yeah, still it’s like ‘Christina vs. Britney’. Why? I don’t want to be put in a position where I have to attack her. I thought it was really weird and unfair when M.I.A. and Joanna Newsom were asked about Lady Gaga and then because they didn’t like her music, it was immediately big news online and they had to shoot each other down.

It’s like the three new, most happening female pop girls, the same kind of age, and they had to shoot each other down! Guys are never asked to do that. It’s just ‘the more, the merrier’, you know?
Occasionally in the past, there have been male rivalries usually involving rock bands or rappers, for example Beatles VS Rolling Stones, or Oasis VS Blur, or the countless feuds involving rappers over the years, but it seems like the media are always trying to create tension and cat fights between female artists when there is usually no hate or disrespect there.

So, why do you think it is?

I think it's because people just love watching ***** fights xL

Na, I think it's because generally women are seen to be a lot better in the music industry and so people immediately come to the conclusion there's not enough room for them all and that it's 1 huge competition to decide which is the best artist. GaGa vs Britney is all I hear about on music videos these days x_X

I also think it's because, people would generally associate men with 1 genre "rap" or "rock". Which I just find ridiculous, considering there's a few decent male singers out there who don't sing rap or rock 'stuff', it's simply a stereotype. So, because people usually see men in 1 or 2 genres they probably wouldn't find that much of a problem, considering 'joining up' (forgotten the word) to do a song together would be useful in those genres whereas in R&B and Pop etc. It's all competition.

I just think it's down to people's opinions at the end of the day, I don't see why they feel the need to try and cause a complete war between 2 artists... I love gaga, Britney and Katy Perry, don't see any need for competition - I'd rather have them 'join together' to do a song xL

Bjork obviously never heard of the massive rivalry between Jay-Z and Nas, or the many other past/ongoing and often lethal feuds between people at all levels in the hip hop world. The difference is that the charts (and therefore music news) are mainly dominated by female solo acts. Is it really that much of a wonder that Britney gets more news stories for her rivalries than when Brisco took a lyrical shot at Wacka Flocka Flame?

is that from drowned in sound? (love drowned in sound xoxo) anyway, i think the whole of the music industry is based on rivalry. which is probably right really as when it comes down to it, yr music is only gonna be heard if yr selling it properly.

But it's always been like that since the 90s, maybe even earlier, and the difference between these female pop "rivalries" and feuds with hip hop artists is that the "rivalry" never actually exists, the media and fans constantly try to pit females against each other even when they've said they respect or admire the other artist in question. Why?

The media are always more brutal with females. For example, Bruno Mars was caught using cocaine earlier this year and it wasn't even a big story... You can bet money that if it was Gaga, Britney, Rihanna or whoever it would be a huge deal, and their rep would be damaged.

I don't exactly agree... There's a lot of rivalry within' the UK Grime scene both Male & Female... but more male than female, they make a dis track, some1 loses respect from there fans/supporters then they come back with an amazing mixtape & gain that respect back... here's some examples of what I mean:

    ALL CONTAIN SWEARING

Most of the UK Grime scene is males so that's why there is more male than female but yeah, I don't think the media have anything to do with it at all... it's down to the fans/supporters. Like Nicki Minaj & Lil' Kim, they made that big themselves & the fans & supporters got involved...

ahh yes. those type of over obsessed fans who stick to one female artist and then **** of others get on my nerves. The media seems to fuel it as well.
