    Question Depression?

How can I tell if I'm depressed or an overreacting teenager?

If you explain your feelings more and maybe in a situation, it would help!

Do you feel miserable or does it really affect you? Or does it just feel like **** and go away 5 minutes later?

I agree with the above post, if it goes away after a while then you're probably overreacting.

I was depressed for a short period when my Mum became quite ill and at the time I didn't think to myself 'I must be depressed'. To be honest I felt like I was walking around in a haze, it's hard to explain but I was just distant and I always felt sad. It wasn't a conscious sad though, I didn't actually realise that it was there until my friends got really worried and spoke to me about it, then I realised that the feelings of helplessness and despair were just me being constantly upset and sad.

i find depression such a broad term, it's not really fair to brush it off as 'hormones' or being a teenager. despite popular belief, it's not true that if depression symptoms go after a while then you weren't really depressed - you only need the symptoms for 2 weeks to be diagnosed with it. it's different for everyone too, some are totally missing feeling while others will feel angry. that's why in my opinion depression doesn't really exist, it's just an easy answer to everything. i was diagnosed with depression when i was 15 but that was only my outer behaviour, you need to think about your thoughts and feelings too. talking to someone, keepin busy and changing your thoughts to positive ones worked for me - i believe you can pull out of it if you really want to. don't bother labelling yourself as something or you'll end up acting like it.

To be honest I think there is a fine line between them both... Although you may not be clinically depressed so to speak some of the emotions you can be facing as a teenager are just the same level as that of a manic depressive. To be honest - I think it's difficult as you've not given much information on what your feeling down about... Is there one thing in particular getting to you or a range of issues?

You need to try and put your life in perspective though and as bad as you feel remember theres always someone out there who is worse off!

Also, if you are thinking extremely bad thoughts I would highly recommend talking to someone, maybe even just a friend so that its off your chest and they can help!!

I'm not sure about depression as such, i've been through the whole depressing stage (well i am kinda now) but yeah thats not the point, sometimes people do over react as teenagers i think if you do generally get bad thoughts or just feel down all the time then i'd speak to someone. Sometimes getting it off your chest really does help.

If you find it's something that reoccurs often and especially if it affects your day to day life it's worth doing something about it.
