3DS help - Spot pass

So I got a 3ds for Christmas and I really like it. But I don't get what spot pass is. could anyone please help? I already know and understand about streetpass

Would have posted earlier but only saw this thread for the first time now.

I assume you probably found out since but i'll give a brief description of it anyway. I got my 3DS last summer and i've gotten many things recieved with spotpass since. It's a service that delivers updates and content for your 3DS and apps automatically as long as you are connected to the internet. A good example of this is the free pokemon pokedex app. Everyday i get a spotpass notification that i've got new pokemon registered on it.
