The armed forces are currently massively oversubscribed due to the recession, my mate from work has been on the waiting list to be a critical care nurse in the army for like a year now.... so yeah, good luck.

Good luck. Due to the cuts they can afford to bemassivelypicky, they can opt to select the very best. The army is no longer a place for the dregs of society to turn up as a last resort, you need to be extremely fit before you even apply, they don't make you fit, they make you fitter. Oh and just so you know, even if you choose an area where you think you'll be all plush and safe at the back of the line, they train everyone asinfantryfirst, you will come into combat.

I'm not sure what it's like in the UK. As for here, my dad is in the Military, currently serving in Afghanistan. Although we miss him, and he has hard times it's a career he wouldn't trade for anything, and he's made friends for life. Although the Military life can seem very appealing be sure to think long and hard on it. Here in the USA there have been massive cuts to our defense budget, many people have been let go. It's a good career, however with the current economic difficulties here the forces aren't handing out promotions, well, barely. Making the career path less viable.

Hope I helped at least a little, kudos to you for wanting to better yourself and fight for your country.

Well the US was spending hundreds of billions on it, what do you expect? :L But yeah the UK is also facing cuts, infact if I remember correctly we just sold a bunch of harriers to the US.

Anyway my brother was going to apply but he gave up getting fit very quickly, so if you're not dedicated I wouldn't bother planning to apply

I didn't know it was possible to go in the army 'part time' you need to think it through properly though... Think about what you really want to do, do you REALLY want to go in the army? Or are you just settling for it because you think it is an easy career path and you're guaranteed to get it? The recruitment process is REALLY tough and you have to be mentally and physically fit, it's also a long process as I'm sure you know and you have to be committedonce you're in, no changing your mind as you have to serve aminimumamount of time which is at least a good couple of years I think I'm not too sure.

Have a think about what you want to do though and really think it through, this isn't something you can just decide over night. Yes the armed forces does sound very appealing but you also have to weigh up the negatives for example the long term psychological affects which happen to so many, I would guess it's almost impossible to escape them.

Ask yourself this, when it comes down to it could you REALLY kill another human being? (if you were infantry, I'm not sure if this is what you're wanting to go into or another area but let's say for arguments sake) I personally couldn't but that is just me. I know they're supposed to be the 'enemy' and what not blah blah blah but it's still another human. A friend of a friend of mine was in the army and got really messed up after shooting a civilian child by accident.

It probably sounds like I'm trying to put you off I'm not I'm just making sure you weigh up your options and decide if it's for you, fair enough if it is, it's a great job and I think any family member would be proud to say their son/daughter is in the army.

If you need more advise after this thread pop into your local army recruitment office, I'm sure they'll be really helpful and help you see what's best for you.
