laptop won't play audio if... (+reppingtons)

EVENING ALL.

i'm extremely competent with computers and technology in general but this really stumps me. if my web browser is open playing youtube videos, and i click on something in itunes, usually whatever media i click in itunes just won't play. it's the same the other way round - i've been playing something through youtube and the audio on a video on youtube just won't play. the video will still work but no audio.

it almost seems like the speakers are exclusive to one media program at a time, and it's annoying. i've had to open chrome a fair few times and close it again just to be able to watch a youtube, iplayer, 4od etc video before it works.

any thoughts?

right click the speaker icon in the system tray, click playback devices, right click speakers and click properties, click the advanced tab.

are the two check boxes under "exclusive mode" checked?

When you have both chrome/youtube and iTunes open, and are trying to play both at the sametime, click the speaker icon and go to mixer. Are either of them mute?

nah, they're all on loud and volume is turned up to the max
