Default Staying friends to an ex

What do you guys think about staying friends to an ex? A lot of people think it's a bad idea but I don't really see the problem. I mean, you were obviously close enough to him/her at one point to be in a relationship with him, why just cut him/her out of your life completely? I'd prefer to call someone "a friend" than "an ex"

If the break-up was nasty (like they cheated on you or whatever) then I'd understand why you wouldn't want to remain friends.

If I feel I could speak to them afterwards then I could and would be friends with them. I get on well with my ex's well most and I feel it just shows that you weren't meant to be more than friends.

I've stayed friends with a couple of them but the rest I don't speak to any more. I think we've basically just picked up from where it was before we started a relationship and it feels just the same like it never happened and I agree with Sam- I think it just shows you weren't meant to be more than friends. I've never been cheated on (that I know of) but if I had I wouldn't speak to him again but if I had to I'd be civil just to show that I'm the more grown up one and make him feel bad for what he'd done.

It can be awkward, but if you were actually friends with the ex while you were going out then i think it can be ok. Sometimes it doesn't work but you have to be able to accept and joke about the past. aha.

I guess I must be lying then when I, as potentially the oldest member of the forum, say that I'm friends to some degree with every single one of my ex's across the years

I would say it differs with circumstances - how close you got for how long, how you broke up etc.
Personally I've only stayed friends with one of my ex's and it's not the same as before, though better than nothing.

my most recent ex broke up with me horribly, but i can honestly say we're great friends now, my current boyfriend is also great friends with him and we all get along greatly.
