    Default sata to usb cable

    can anyone help me out... i want to be able to plug my old desktop hard drives into my laptop to retrieve files.

    i dont need an enclosure or anything .. just a cable or something that goes from HDD to usb, my hard drives are sata II 500gb

    Just buy a SATA to USB adaptor? Go on Ebuyer, Maplin, they all sell em.

    yeah but they all say for 2.5 and thats laptop ones mine are 3.5 and im getting confused aha

    Sata is a standard connector shared between all 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives. If you just get an adaptor it will work for both.

    I have an enclosure (like a case for more permanent drive use) that does 3.5 only, but the following product seems good and well rated for occasional use:

    Also does IDE for any older drives you might have floating around.

    USB isn't able to power 3.5" drives. You will need a separate power cable.

    USB/SATA adapters come with a mains power source.
