Default Book Club~ The Lovely Bones

The votes have been counted and verified (tsk tsk @Umbrella-; tried to cheat) and this weeks Book of the Week will be.....

    ----------------------------------

These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections—sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent—that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it. The events my death brought were primarily that the bones of a body that would become whole at some unpredictable time in the future. The price of what I came to see as this miraculous lifeless body had been my life.

Literally my most read, most favourite book. I have read this so many times that my book has fallen apart, pages have become yellow and it has turnt into something that looks like its been through a paper shredder. The first time I read this it took me a day as I just couldn't put it down, I wanted to just find out what would happen to Mr.Harvey and whether this book that I heard so many great things about would be worth the read. I read this when I was 13ish after my mum talked about it and how much she had appreciated reading it. For those who have just watched the movie the book is 100% better! It is slightly more disturbing and it has much more detail but that was always something that attracted me.

Sebold (the author) has this unique and original way of writing which allows the itself to be totally accessible. The book was written from Susie's point of view and it has to be said it was pulled off. Each individual person is pulled off perfectly and none of the characters feel unreal or like they would be people who wouldn't exist. Each different story and background to the characters is shown and just allows you to feel what they are feeling. The pain, the regret and the hope that they find her before the evidence mounts upon them just felt so real to me.

There were so many parts I got so emotional whilst reading and I almost found myself tearing up at some parts days after finishing the book every time! I'm tearing up thinking now of some parts of the book! The book centres around the grief of the family and the unsolved case, and how it effects each and everyone of the characters. For example when the dog found the elbow you couldn't help but think 'oh god! the family are going to have a tougher time with this coming to light!'. (This doesn't occur in the movie)

Despite being dead Susie still manages to grow as a person and evolve throughout the whole book. The book starts of sounding like its being written by that of a teenager but as her family grow and move on so does the writing style which I think is extremely exciting and interesting to read. She watches her family from a place that is sort of her heaven and she is able to share their experiences. This is shown in the movie to for those who have seen in through the way her sister grows and all the different experiences her father has. She even manages to stay in contact with her family by showing herself at certain moments which brings them together even more maybe even to help with the idea of closure.

My favourite part was when Susie entered Ruth's body and had good times with Ray as I could sense the love and want and passion it was beautiful! There was only one part of the book and that was the ending that I felt was rushed and just wasn't padded out and explained enough for me. But other than that there isn't one single thing I can complain about.

I enjoyed reading this book so much that I'm off to go read it again! 10/10 one of my all time favourites!!!

This really is a great book, the first chapter is so raw and gritty and basically thrusts you into the story. The subject matter isn't exactly pretty but the story flows well and takes you through a range of emotions and personally it's not the sort of book I thought I would enjoy, but it was a great read. I was initally slightly disappointed in the ending, as in, it didn't turn out the way I would have hoped, but on reflection a good book doesn't really end the way you think it would, so after dwelling on it, the ending isn't really a disappointment, it brings the story to a satisfying end.

Would definitely reccomend this book to people.
