Why would anyone want to kill pets? It's probably because the Monster Plants never hit it off so they want more money; people have spent Credits on them. What they should do is say that pets that weren't bought previously can't die, get lost or breed etc.

As Samanfa said, they should make pets already purchased immortal but unbreedable. Or, if you chose to breed them, they begin to die. Or, no pet has to die at all, because that's pretty sad.
