US Senate throws out gun control attempt by 54-46

Following a full court press by the Obama administration, and specifically gun tzar Joe Biden, to legislate "stronger" gun law in the last several months ever since the Sandy Hook massacre, the initiative may have just suffered a terminal defeat following a failure to even pass a bipartisan background check amendment in the democrat-controlled Senate. CBS reports that "In a major setback for gun control advocates, the Senate Wednesday voted down a key amendment to the embattled Democratic gun bill, signaling the increasingly dim prospects of any meaningful legislative action aimed at strengthening America's gun laws. The bipartisan Manchin-Toomey amendment, a background check expansion devised by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and a handful of other lawmakers, earned only 54 votes, falling six votes short of the 60-vote threshold. Vice President Joe Biden, who led the Obama administration's months-long lobbying effort on behalf of stronger gun laws, presided over the vote."

The vote effectively kills any hope for a comprehensive law, and makes a mockery of Obama's recent aggressive anti-gun initiative.

It would be pretty stupid to throw out gun ownership or even try to create tougher laws. Whether or not you're against gun ownership, the damage is already done and the creation of tougher laws may mean innocent people become vulnerable to those who will obtain guns regardless of any laws. The black market is alive and well, and people will already have ownership of guns.

Senator Told Shooting Victim’s Mother He Supported Background Checks, Then Voted Against Them

Shortly before the a crucial Senate vote to expand background checks in gun transactions, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) sent a letter to the mother of a shooting victim claiming that he was “truly sorry” for her son’s death and that “strengthening background checks is something we agree on.” A few days later, he voted to kill the background checks bill.

I think it's common sense to have tougher background checks on people who purchase guns.

The Americans aren't going to fall for that one, because for everytime an incident happens you'll just be back asking for more and more restrictions until we reach the stage we have in this country where by guns are essentially illegal despite our Bill of Rights (true Common Law) saying otherwise.

Interestingly I read that the two terrorists who shot the policeman(?) had two background checks in the past two years prior to the Boston bombing - proving that you can't legislate against insanity.

A liar, but a liar who supports the constitution - better in my eyes than a liar who doesn't support the constitution.

If bribery is what it takes to uphold the right to bear arms and not be infringed, then thats a price worth paying.
