Chinese media report that there has been an explosion in an arrivals hall at Beijing airport.

Pictures posted on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, Weibo, show smoke in Terminal 3.

There are reports that the blast may have been caused by someone in a wheelchair.

Eyewitnesses have claimed that a man was sitting in the arrivals hall, making noise before an explosion took place.

One person is believed to have been injured.

The Sina Weibo microblog of state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said a man detonated a package of black gunpowder used to make firecrackers just outside the international arrivals exit.

A man in a wheelchair was reported to have detonated an explosive device at the arrivals area of the international terminal at the Beijing airport on Saturday evening, State media reported.

The official Xinhua news agency said, citing witnesses, that “a disabled person ignited bombs on himself”.

The explosion was heard at 6.24 pm (3.54 pm IST). The number of casualties was unknown and no deaths were reported as of 7.50 pm local time (5.20 pm IST).

A number of photographs showing the explosion were posted on Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese Twitter equivalent. Many photos showed a man in a wheelchair holding aloft a packet minutes before the explosion, which took place at a section of the arrivals zone located next to the secured Customs area.

Police officers were seen clearing the area as smoke and dust carpeted the arrivals zone.

The man in the wheelchair appeared to be next to only a couple of exiting passengers, with the explosion occurring some distance away from the usually crowded exit zone where visitors are allowed.

While the current status of the man was unclear – local media reported he had been rushed to a hospital – photographs on Weibo did not appear to show any injured bystanders.

China media reports quoted police authorities as saying the man was 34-years-old and from northeastern Shandong province.

Initial Chinese media reports identified the man in the photograph as Jin Zhongxing, who had reportedly been petitioning authorities for justice. In China, citizens aggrieved by the local government are allowed to petition central authorities for their cases to be heard.

Chinese media outlets reported that Mr. Jin’s petition, the contents of which could not be independently verified, said he had been beaten to paralysis by police and that his repeated attempts at seeking justice had been fruitless, driving him to desperation.
