Teacher Resigns Amid Student Sex Claims

A FEMALE teacher at an all-boys Catholic school in Sydney has resigned over reported inappropriate relationships with students. The St Aloysius' College teacher, who taught Drama and English and is aged in her late 20s, had sex last year with at least two Year 12 students who were over 16 years old. The teacher's behaviour was exposed when a parent found out about a relationship with her son, Fairfax Media reports.

The school sent a note home to parents this week, alerting them about the incident.Other teachers at the school were shocked to learn of the allegations, news.com.au has learnt. Father Peter Hosking SJ, the Rector of the Milsons Point school, confirmed the reports in a statement to news.com.au. "At the end of last year, a teacher resigned from the College following allegations of inappropriate contact between the teacher and students," the statement reads. "As soon as knowledge of the allegations was acquired, due process immediately was undertaken.

I feel like this story has a similar feel to that posted by @FlyingJesus; (link here) where she talked about the difference in public reaction for an older woman to have sexual relations with younger guys compared to the other way around.

I always find cases like this really dodgy. What age would people normally be in Year 12? I don't understand how it works, here is completely different

I think it's more to do with the teacher abusing a position of power more so than whether the student was over the age of consent.

If this was the UK that would be true. A teacher could have a relationship with a Year 12 student from another school and it would be legal.

Apparently the age of consent is 18 in Australia... Is that true @Daltron? Wikipedia could be lying but I don't understand the federal law stuff - just make a single law and age and be done with it

No it's 16 with the exception of two states where it is 17.
The sexual relations in this story were legal but against the school policy I am assuming

edit: oh and in QLD it's 18.

It varies per state but in this case it was NSW where consent is 16.
